Brandon started practicing for the football season last May, the end of his Freshman year, every weekday for several hours. He practiced nearly every weekday all summer including a week long football camp in the middle of July, the hottest time of the year! He sweated and worked hard. Then school started. The work continued but it also came with 8 hours of school before the practice even started.
But work he did.
And he was rewarded for it as he was a starter for this inaugural season.
But as I wrote about earlier, the third game in, he got himself a doozy of a concussion. Only we did not know it right away so he continued playing. (Later we learned from the sports doctor that a concussion heals much faster with lots of rest those initial days, including no school, television, or video games!)
Since we learned this information late in the stages of the concussion, his healing time was prolonged and he missed the next four games. Then there was a "bye" week so he had another week to heal.
Finally, the very last game of the season, he was cleared to play. Not without some misgivings from his mother, who was not all that anxious to see another head injury. Brandon's sports doctor said that 99% of us earn our living with our heads, not our bodies so at all cost, preserve the head!!!
Nevertheless, play he did. And he was happy and the team was doing well. Until injuries seemed to knock several of the players out, one after another.
And Brandon did not escape injury when the largest boy on the opposing team fell and stepped right on Brandon's ankle, creating quite a pain for him! It swelled and now he is hobbling. But he got his last game in and he was happy!
